Before I ever picked up a camera professionally, I was (and still am!) a babysitter and nanny. At first glance, those two jobs may not seem connected—but they teach me lessons every day that shape me into the photographer and business owner I am today.

Patience is Everything

When you spend your days babysitting or nannying, patience isn’t optional—it’s survival. Tantrums, spilled snacks, endless questions… they all remind me to slow down, meet someone where they’re at, and respond with calmness instead of frustration. That same patience is one of my biggest strengths behind the camera. Whether I’m working with shy kids, energetic toddlers, or adults who feel “awkward” in front of the lens, I know how to create a relaxed environment that brings out genuine smiles and moments.

Reading People’s Needs

Kids don’t always say what they’re feeling, so as a babysitter/nanny, I constantly practice reading nonverbal cues—body language, tone, energy shifts. That ability translates seamlessly into photography. I can tell when a client needs encouragement, when it’s time for a break, or when the best candid shot is about to happen. It also helps me tune into what my clients really want, even if they don’t know how to put it into words.

Problem-Solving on the Spot

With kids, things rarely go exactly as planned—and the same goes for photoshoots. Babysitting and nannying keep me sharp when it comes to pivoting quickly and creatively. Rain during an outdoor shoot? Cranky toddler who won’t sit still? No problem—I’ve built the skill set to adjust, keep everyone calm, and still create magic.

Stronger Communication & Connection

One of my favorite parts of being a babysitter/nanny is the relationships—getting to know each child, earning their trust, and being a safe space for them. I carry that same mindset into my business. I don’t just want to take photos; I want to connect with my clients, understand their stories, and give them images that truly reflect who they are.

The Heart Behind My Work

Most importantly, babysitting and nannying give me a deeper appreciation for moments. The small, fleeting, everyday things—giggles, messy hair, hugs that last a little longer. Those are the things parents cherish, and those are exactly the kinds of moments I strive to capture with my camera. It’s not just about posed photos; it’s about documenting the heart of a family, the bond of love, and the beauty of real life.

Why This Matters for Your Family Session

If you’ve ever felt nervous about booking family photos because you’re worried your kids won’t cooperate—I get it. The truth is, I’ve seen it all as a nanny: meltdowns, wiggles, shyness, sugar rushes, you name it. Nothing surprises me, and I know exactly how to keep kids comfortable, entertained, and smiling (sometimes without them even realizing it). That makes me a great option if you want a family photographer who can handle the unpredictable and still deliver photos you’ll love.

Being a babysitter and nanny isn’t just a side job—it’s the foundation of the way I approach photography and business today. It teaches me patience, adaptability, and the value of connection, all of which fuel the way I serve my clients.

Because at the end of the day, photography is more than just pictures. It’s about people. And nannying continues to show me exactly how to love and serve them well.
